Providing educational programs for home gardeners in Allegheny County.

Master Gardener Program

Penn State Master Gardeners volunteer in garden-related educational activities throughout Allegheny County. Master Gardeners attend an 18 session training program that provides them with a broad-based horticultural background. In return, Master Gardeners volunteer as garden experts in their communities; presenting talks to garden clubs and small groups and answering home gardening questions in the Allegheny County Extension Office.

Gardenline is a call-in service to answer your gardening questions. Penn State Master Gardeners are on duty Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from March 16 through October 29. Please call 412-473-2600 or 2601

DEMONSTRATION GARDENS

The Penn State Cooperative Extension Demonstration Gardens' primary mission is to educate home gardeners about annual bedding plants, perennials and ornamental grasses that perform well in western Pennsylvania. The gardens are located in North Park and South Park. The gardens provide area gardeners with an opportunity to see new and unusual varieties of bedding plants as well as heirloom varieties. All plants are labeled with common and botanical plant names; cultural information; and the name of the supplier who donated the plants to the garden.

The gardens are planted and maintained by Penn State Master Gardener volunteers. Maintenance consists of watering, deadheading and weeding one night a week at each site. Pesticide use is minimal, mostly to help with weed control. The gardens are open and unfenced. No effort is made to keep deer and other wildlife out of them. Plants that are severely damaged by deer browsing are labeled as "deer damaged" and not used in the gardens again.

The gardens are planted the first week of June and the annuals removed in late October.
